Wegovy ʻskinny jabʻ to be made available on the NHS in England

In case you didn't hear about this already, this is massive news for people in the UK suffering from obesity. The NHS is set to trial the use of Wegovy for weight loss. Wegovy, licensed for weight loss, is the brand name for the GLP-1 RA drug Semaglutide. Wegovy has yet to be launched in the UK by manufacturer Novo Nordisk and there is no news on when the trials will start, but this is good news for the 35,000 people in England who will benefit from the NHS trial.

The new weight loss drug has received a recommendation from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to be made accessible by the NHS. The drug is designed to help individuals struggling with weight loss by curbing appetite and promoting a sense of fullness. This recommendation is a welcome development for those who have been struggling to shed pounds and have not seen results with other methods, providing them with a new option for support from the NHS.

Back in March, Helen Knight, director of medicines evaluation at NICE, said: “For some people losing weight is a real challenge which is why a medicine like semaglutide is a welcome option.

“It won’t be available to everyone. Our committee has made specific recommendations to ensure it remains value for money for the taxpayer, and it can only be used for a maximum of two years.”
