WEIGHT LOSS MEDICATION NEWS
A range of independent Apps will prescribe Skinny Jabs in UK on behalf of NHS
Big news in UK this week is the news that NICE is recommending that a series of third-party apps prescribe weight loss medication. NICE, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has published guidance that 4 apps can be used to prescribe weight loss medication - when it becomes available under the NHS.
These apps also perform a range of other functions including, but not limited to offering online health coaching services, online checkups and check-ins, weight tracking, recipes and meal plans.
These third-party apps mentioned by NICE are Second Nature, Livea, Roczen and Oviva. The apps are not all ready, just yet, to prescribe weight loss medication and some will need to get “DTAC” (Digital Technology Assessment Criteria) approval from NHS England first.
It seems NICE believes there is a cost-benefit to handing off prescribing weight loss medication to private companies rather than keeping it under the remit of your GP.
This could be good news for plenty of people living with obesity if it makes accessing weight loss medication easier. On the other hand, there will be a requirement to keep up with the digital programmes designed by the apps in order to continue to get a supply of the medication.
Of course, weight loss medication is already available from online apps and platforms, although not all of the current providers are part of this NICE-backed guidance. It will be interesting to see how companies that are able to prescribe on behalf of the NHS compete with those that aren't.
This could be somewhat of a moot point given the other news this week that Novo Nordisk has said Wegovy wonʻt be available on the NHS until 2025 (see below).

SKINNY JAB / WEIGHT LOSS INJECTION AVAILABILITY
Looking for Ozempic, Saxenda, skinny jabs or weight loss injections online?
We checked a range of online pharmacies and online doctor ʻclinicsʻ in the UK this week for Saxenda and Ozempic. The picture is pretty bleak if you are looking for an online prescriber and don’t already have a prescription, or are not already a customer.
Some online doctors or weight loss clinics may have availability of some drugs for existing customers, indeed most online providers in the UK are now stating that they only have supply for existing customers.
Weight Loss Buzz exists to help patients make informed choices and so we aim to gather current and relevant information about availability. We will bring you an update on weight loss injection availability each week, as it changes. While it seems that Ozempic and Saxenda are generally not available from online clinics for new patients in the UK right now, the situation is in flux and subject to change. We will also bring news of alternative medication and weight loss approaches for those affected by the supply issues.
