WEIGHT LOSS MEDICATION NEWS
Beware of Fakes: There is no such thing as ʻgenericʻ Ozempic
If you have been using any form of GLP1-A weight loss medication… you know, Wegovy, Ozempic, Rybelsus or Saxenda, and others, you will be aware of the fact that there are drug names and brand names. The drug semaglutide is sold under the brand names Wegovy and Ozempic. The drug Liraglutide is sold under the brand name Saxenda. The global shortage of both drugs has led to patients desperate to continue their medication looking to sources they would not usually trust to provide medication.
If you have been using these drugs but can't get them right now and are considering alternative providers, you might want to consider some key facts before you buy.
Letʻs take semaglutide as an example.
Ownership - Semaglutide is manufactured by Danish company Novo Nordisk. It is their innovation, their drug, and they alone own the rights to manufacture it.
Patent - They own a patent for semaglutide, meaning no one else can make it. The patent runs until 2031 which means no one can make a ʻgenericʻ version until then.
Legal disputes - As the legal patent owner, Novo Nordisk is suing companies who are making versions of the drug claiming to be their patented semaglutide.
Generic version - There is simply no generic version of semaglutide (Ozempic). Anyone claiming to sell ʻgeneric ozempicʻ or ʻgeneric semaglutideʻ is selling something else.
Compounded semaglutide - Compounded is a term used to describe a drug made up by an independent pharmacist. It is not an official drug, it does not come from Novo Nordisk and it has not been approved by health officials.
Compounded Semaglutude sodium - is a salt formation designed to act like semaglutide but it is not the same drug and may not behave in the same way.
Semaglutide compounded with Vitamin B12 - Some people are claiming their version of compounded semaglutide and vitamin B12 offers additional benefits such as stopping you from being tired. If you know you have a B12 deficiency, by all means, take B12 from your local pharmacy. But you don't need it mixed with a weight loss drug.
So, the key headlines here are that formally there's no such thing as generic versions of these drugs, if you buy “compounded” versions they may not behave the same, if they do anything at all.
Supply shortages of anything attract scammers wanting to make a fast buck out of unwitting consumers. So be armed with the right information, - which is that basically, unless itʻs branded Ozempic, it's not Ozempic. The same goes for the other brand-name drugs.
Do not accept ʻgenericʻ versions because they could either be dangerous or simply do nothing at all.
While this may not be news you wanted to hear I hope it's useful to you. In my next update, Iʻll be talking more about how to spot and avoid weight loss scams and then we’ll take a look at what to do if you find your weight loss injection supply abruptly stopped.
